Overview
By default, Wishlist Plus enables Privacy-First Wishlist for all stores operating in the EU and EEA. This means your shoppers can continue using the wishlist even after declining cookies — their saved items stay on their device only, with no personal data collected or transmitted to Swym's servers.
You are in full control. You can opt out of this setting at any time from your Configurations panel.
Note: This feature is enabled by default for EU/EEA stores only. Stores outside these regions are unaffected and will see no change to their existing wishlist behaviour. |
How to Configure the Setting
Step 1 — Open the Wishlist Plus App
Navigate to the Shopify Admin of your store and open the Swym Wishlist Plus app.
The Wishlist Plus app home screen in Shopify Admin. The left panel shows the app navigation including the Configurations option.
Step 2 — Go to Configurations
In the left-hand panel, select Configurations.
The Configurations page. The Compliance & Accessibility card is visible in the Features section. Click it to open the privacy settings.
Step 3 — Open Compliance & Accessibility
On the Configurations page, click the Compliance & Accessibility card. This opens the Settings page where Privacy-First Wishlist controls are located.
The Compliance & Accessibility Settings page. The Privacy-First Wishlist section is on the right, with the Works without cookies checkbox checked by default for EU/EEA stores.
Step 4 — Review the Default Setting
For all EU/EEA stores, the Works without cookies checkbox is enabled by default. This allows your shoppers to experience a fully functional, privacy-compliant wishlist even when cookies are declined.
The Works without cookies checkbox in its default enabled state. Saves items to the shopper's device if they decline cookies. Keeps the heart icon working.
What this setting does:
Keeps the wishlist heart icon visible and functional after a cookie decline
Saves items to the shopper's browser (device only) — nothing is sent to Swym's servers
Prompts the shopper to save locally on their first heart-click, with a free choice to decline
Invites the shopper to log in and sync their list from their 3rd saved item onwards — device storage holds a maximum of 5 items, at which point login is required to save further
Step 5 — Opt Out if Required
If you prefer the wishlist to stop functioning entirely when a shopper declines cookies, uncheck the Works without cookies checkbox. A Save button will appear at the top of the page — click it to confirm your change.
The checkbox unchecked. The Save button appears at the top of the page — click it to apply your change. You can re-enable the feature at any time by checking the box and saving again.
Note: Opting out means shoppers who decline your cookie banner will not be able to save items to a wishlist at all. This was the previous default behaviour. |
Step 6 — Configure the Consent Prompt for Shoppers
Within the Privacy-First Wishlist section, you will also find a second checkbox: Ask for Permission.
The Ask for Permission checkbox in its default enabled state. It enables the site to show a consent prompt on the shopper's first heart-click. Recommended for EU/EEA stores to ensure full compliance. When unchecked, shoppers see the prompt only after their third heart-click.
When checked, this displays a prompt to the shopper on their first heart-click, asking for permission to save items to their device. We recommend keeping this checked. It ensures that shopper consent is obtained even for local device storage, which is the most privacy-compliant approach for EU/EEA stores.
If you choose to uncheck this option — for example, to reduce the number of prompts shown to shoppers — the first-click permission prompt will not appear. Instead, shoppers will be prompted only from their third heart-click onwards. We recommend making this decision in consultation with your legal adviser, as the appropriate approach may vary depending on your store's specific compliance requirements.
Should you choose to exercise this option, remember to click ‘save’ at the top.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this feature work alongside my existing cookie consent platform (e.g. Consentmo, OneTrust)?
Yes. Privacy-First Wishlist is designed to work in tandem with your cookie consent management platform. Your CMP controls whether Swym's scripts load at all — if a shopper accepts cookies on your banner, the standard cloud wishlist activates as normal. Privacy-First Wishlist only activates for shoppers who decline, using device storage rather than cookies. The two layers work together, not in conflict.
Is any personal data collected when a shopper uses the device-only wishlist?
No. When a shopper saves items to their device, those items are stored in their browser's local storage only. No personal data is collected, transmitted, or stored on Swym's servers during this local session.
What happens when a shopper logs in after saving items locally?
Their locally saved items sync to their Swym account via the standard Shopify login. From that point, their wishlist is available across all their devices as normal.
Can I enable this for stores outside the EU/EEA?
The default setting applies to EU/EEA stores. If you operate in multiple regions and want to apply Privacy-First Wishlist to other storefronts, please contact Swym support.
What if I opt out and then want to re-enable it?
Simply return to Configurations → Compliance & Accessibility, check the Works without cookies box, and click Save. The feature reactivates immediately.
